food is no longer a stationary thing. you can't just sit around and have a meal; it is now a get up and go type of thing! lunch wagons are not a new thing. they've been around for as long as anyone can remember.... but today, they are far more than just simple lunch wagons. they have style, they have themes, and best of all.... they have a plethora of food items that range from classic comfort food to gastronomic forward thinking cuisine. enter "Whatcha Fillin", one of the newest food trucks on the scene here in HI. their eats? a modern and tasty twist on "Imagawayaki", a popular street food in Japan. instead of the standard red bean filling, they substitute it with ingredients like cheese, beef, chocolate, and anything they can think of! when you look for them, look for this very cute styled truck!

if you're just visiting my website, and don't know what "Eat The Street" is.... i'm here to explain. Eat The Street is a monthly event here in Hawaii. it features different food trucks from around the island. they all gather in one location. it is so popular now, it has turned into a twice a month event (happening usually on the second saturday and last friday of each month). see my other posts (click here!) from ETS! below is what i had at the most recent ETS in May.... :D i've been to ETS about 3 or 4 times now, and this truck is usually there.... but for some reason, we always pass it by. UNTIL NOW! we finally decided to check it out. why? b/c of the "Gyrami" sandwich..... i like gyros. i like pastrami. so why not try whatever this was, right? it is pastrami meat, gyro meats, tzatziki sauce, mustard and a pickle all in a warm pita bread. this, while weird sounding.... was actually really good! try one if you ever get the chance! i also hear that their Italian beef sandwiches and hot dogs are good here. maybe i'll try at the next ETS! here is "Five-O Ribs". a newish company featuring smoked ribs and meats. i read up on them a little bit.... apparently the owner wanted a change from his current job, and decided that cooking ribs would be a part of that change. currently, i don't think they have any standard locations for their truck, so i think the only place you can find them right now, is at the ETS events..... here is the ribs plate. i personally liked the ribs. they had that smokey, sweet flavor. one friend who tried it did not like the sweetness, and another friend said "i've had better", but then failed to follow up on where the better ribs were from..... either way, i thought the ribs here were good. try it, and judge for yourself! Next stop - Camille's on Wheels. i've had some of the other dishes here before, and they were good. we had to stop here to check out what they had this time..... this is the beef and cheese empanada from Camille's. it was..... ok. not amazing. perhaps we should have gotten the fish tacos? oh well, there is always next time! here is "Hawaii's Fried Musubi". the line was CRAZY LONG. thats supposed to mean they're good right?........... see that? that is their 3 fried chicken wings and 1/2 of a fried spam musubi. what to know what it cost? $8. EIGHT DOLLARS FOR THAT. O_O while the chicken wings were really delicious, the fried spam musubi was kinda junk. Da Kitchen has a better fried spam musubi, AND at Da Kitchen they give you a whole one. not a half of one. this was their spicy ahi musubi with chicken wings.... my friend who had this was not impressed. by the way.... this one was $9 for a HALF of a musubi, a small portion of ahi, and 3 chicken wings. in short, Hawaii's Fried Musubi was a RIP-OFF and entirely not worth the wait in line. we ended the night with Ono Pops again. this time, i tried the azuki bean pop (on the left), and the Tamarind pop (on the right). i didn't like the mealy texture of the azuki bean, but my friends liked it. my tamarind was sweet, salty and tangy. another interesting treat :)
if you're in Hawaii, come down to ETS! the next 2 events will be: Saturday, April 14. Kapolei High School 3pm - 8pm AND Friday, April 27. 555 South Street 4pm - 9pm the theme is BACON! website: http://www.streetgrindz.com/ it feels like just yesterday i went to Eat The Street July.... and here we are, ready again for another one in August. its almost too much eating i tell you. well, by now, you should know what ETS is.... if you don't = look at my past posts for JULY and MAY. that up there is some good ass food. kimchee fried rice and korean chicken made by the "famous" (well, maybe only in Mililani), Alonzo's. Alonzo's has a restaurant as well as a truck. The restaurant is open to the public and located at the Mililani Golf Course. they're actually known for their kalbi, but after eating this from them - i'm sure they can pretty much cook anything. it was damn goooooood! PAUL'S POPPERS is a new business, not only to the food truck rally, but also to the island. at ETS it featured "poppers", or won tons filled with pepperoni pizza, jalapeno cheese burger, or spinach artichoke. I LOVED THEM ALL. they seem so simple in idea, i'm sure that you or I could make them at home.... but really, how often am i going to do this? i might try it though - i'll keep ya posted. i've heard about CAMILLE'S ON WHEELS before, and every time someone mentions them, they rave about how good they are. well, just so you know, THEY LIVE UP TO THE HYPE. this dish above, and the dish below were FAN-F*ING-TASTIC...... mini tacos were the perfect size. about 3 -4 bites each, these tacos, while little, were tasty! :D they also had this DELICIOUS chicken pot pie - which i was tricked into eating before it was cool enough to eat. this resulted in my mouth being napalmed with deliciousness..... it was like i was being punished and rewarded at the same time. if you get this (and you should), be sure to wait a little for it to cool. it will be difficult, but worth it. of course.... we had to hit up SOUL PATROL. i've gone to ETS 3 times now, and every time i have stopped at Soul Patrol. it is that good. this time, we tried the crab mac and cheese. i repeat = CRAB. MAC. AND. CHEESE. words cannot describe how many heart attacks i would suffer for this dish............. EAT IT. you might be asking yourself - "what are those alien eggs?" WELL those are "egg puffs" from PUFFETTES. also known as egg waffles (you can try make your own with THIS PAN from Williams Sonoma). apparently they are popular in China (what my chinese friend tells me).... and i can see why. these were strange, yet delicious! its like a mixture of a waffle with custard mochi type filling..... its hard to explain, but easy to eat, so if you spot the Puffetts truck (i've seen them in front of Sports Authority in town), then STOP and get some. they're good! you might think this is just your average dessert - but then you'd be wrong, and we'd all shake our heads in disappointment. what you're looking at is actually chili pepper ice cream. DECEIVING! underneath that is a lovely apricot crumble. both were good, and the ice cream was surprising. not in a bad, omg my mouth is on fire way, but in a good, this is interesting and different kind of way. next to it is fresh lemonade - both of which are from FAIRY CAKES. sorry folks, i think this chili pepper ice cream was a special for the theme at ETS..... had to be there! and to end the night, we all decided to get some popcicles from ONO POPS. you might have heard of them? they're usually at all the trade shows, new product shows, etc. pictured is lilikoi cheesecake and mexican chocolate. the lilikoi cheese cake was just ok..... the mexican chocolate was like a fudge pop with cinnamon!
check out the Eat the Street website for more info! the next ETS event will be in Mililani at Rec Center 7 (Mauka), September 17th from 2pm - 7pm. hope to see you there! :D it is that time again! Eat The Street is a monthly event that takes place the last Friday of every month. there is a different theme for each "Eat The Street". this months theme was GARLIC! if you're not familiar with this event - it is called "Eat The Street" because it features food trucks from all over the island. it is where all the portable restaurants converge in one place to form a kind of mobile food court. you don't have to go trekking all over the island to find them, b/c they're all in one place! this month's crowd was HUGE. about 3 times as large as May's event. i don't know why this is? was there something else going on in May resulting in a smaller crowd? was it the garlic theme that attracted peoples attention? i have no idea. the first place we hit up was a small Popsicle cart - ALOHA POPS. they are like Ono Pop's but with different flavors. we wanted to try the garlic chocolate pop, but unfortunately, by the time we got there, they were sold out. they were actually sold out of a lot of flavors......is it me, or should they have crossed out what they were sold out of? hm.... i got the li-hing mui pineapple and my 2 friends got the espresso flavor. they liked theirs. and i like mine as well, however, b/c they use real chunks of pineapple, i found myself with stringy pieces of fruit stuck in my teeth. the flavor was good, but i could have gone without the fruit floss. here is some Inari sushi (sushi rice wrapped with aburaage) from WHY'S. we grabbed this to hold us over while waiting in line for more food! ELENA'S serves home-style filipino food. i think they have a restaurant as well as a truck....... here is a section of their menu. i was interested in trying their pork adobo fried rice omlette b/c i've had the one at Juliez, and that one was very good. i heard good things about Elena's, so i had to try it! my friends did not want to wait for me to take the picture. i'm sure they're sick of me taking pictures of my food. there were big chunks of pork adobo in this dish, and the fried rice was ok. honestly, comparing Elena's VS Juliez Pork Adobo Fried Rice..... i liked Juliez flavor better. Elena's one is good - but Juliez takes this one. this is Elena's Lechon Special. i'm not sure what is special about it? i've had filipino lechon before (called Lechon Kawalli), and it had the same ingredients - crispy pork and pork skin, onion and tomato. while it was not "special" in my eyes, it was definitely good in my mouth. lechon kawalli is one of my favorite dishes, and Elena's does this right. under all that coleslaw, you'll find a pulled pork sandwich from SOUL PATROL. they also have a restaurant near UH called Soul Cafe. i've never been to the actual cafe, but i have had the food from Soul before - and it is good..... this sandwich lives up to the other dishes i've had. the coleslaw mixed with the sweet sauce on the tender pork is a winner. it is an incredibly messy sandwich, but it is soooooo gooood. you might want to bring this home and eat it, b/c like i said, it is really messy, but WORTH IT! this is NOT from Eat The Street...... this deliciousness is from CITY CAFE. we decided to get some dessert after the Eat the Street event, and made our way here. they serve Taiwanese shave ice, sandwiches, bubble drinks and snacks. Taiwanese shave ice is not like your regular, local shave ice. it is like the F.O. B. cousin of local shave ice. it speaks "good english" and is fun to be around, even though it is clearly different. it is indeed "shaved - ice", but instead of fruity syrup, they put brown sugar syrup on top, THEN, you can choose other toppings to put on. here i got the small size with 3 toppings = boba (tapioca balls), coffee jelly, and taro. sorry... its so brown, i know. but, delicious! my friend also go the small size, but for her toppings, she got custard, mochi balls, and condensed milk. both were really good! next time, i'm getting the large size - it comes with 6 toppings :) City Cafe has lots of different toppings other than the ones you've seen here, so go visit them and try it!
********************************************* Eat The Street 555 South St Honolulu, HI 96813 website: http://www.streetgrindz.com/ ********************************************* City Cafe 1518-F Makaloa St Honolulu, HI 96814 Phone: (808) 398-7598 YES, yes, i know - another really late post..... i know. here i am, talking about last May's Eat The Street, and June's Eat The Street is right around the corner.... i know. i suck :( please forgive. i say - hey, better late than never! here are drool-worthy pics from May's Eat The Street. try not to eat your computer. check out this crowd! people and food trucks as far as the eye can see!!! it rained, but that did NOT stop anyone! SOUL PATROL = our first stop was this soul food truck. you may have heard of them? they first started out as a truck, but now have a restaurant near the University of Hawaii. i've always wanted to try their food, so why not now? what you're looking at is a delicious container of collard greens. it was smoky, hammy, and so-so-so good! SOUL PATROL = the "mixed plate" from their truck. it contains fried chicken, cole slaw, fried pork (i think, sorry i can't remember), baked black beans and cornbread with honey. if i could marry food - i would have proposed right then and there. SOUL PATROL = you know what that is? THAT is the best shrimp and grits i've ever had. ever. EVER. and i've had some shrimp and grits..... trust me - if this is your first experience with shrimp and grits, then no other will compare ever again. EAT THIS - EAT THIS NOW..... its a little pricey, but trust me, it is 100% worth it. PIZZA = yeah, ok, so we did not get pizza b/c #1 the line was hella long, #2 they were still cooking the pizzas and #3 i didn't really feel like pizza :( however, i was impressed that this company actually TRAVELS around with a brick oven! amazing. maybe i'll try next time we go. i guess we'd have to go early...... excuse me - does that say MALASADA BURGERS?! i must try this........ we're stopping....... so THIS is the malasada burger. no, it does not look appetizing..... and some of you might be saying "malasada burger? ew!" but hey, don't knock it till you try it...... perhaps another angle will make it look more appetizing? so is this workin for you yet? and what did it taste like? well, eat a burger, and then eat a malasada with that burger.... TA-DA. its like you were there. :P Unfortunately - i don't think i'll be getting this again. BUT i do encourage you to try it. it wasn't bad, just un-impressive. Mexican sodas really are the best sodas..... this is Tamarind flavored! if you don't like tamarind, you will not like this beverage. but if you DO like tamarind... you will love, love, love this soda :D so delicious. check out the taco trucks at the event, and you will find this soda..... and finally.... the "waffle dog." if you were thinking KC Waffle dog - you are wrong. this is nothing like that.
the KC Waffle dog was like riding a unicorn, while this waffle dog was more like riding a donkey. this waffle dog was bland. the KC waffle dog was so much better. man, i miss KC drive inn!!!!! the next Eat The Street event will take place on Friday, June 24th. make sure you mark your calenders, and come hungry!!! check out my "Other Great Sites" tab at the top of this page, and click on "Street Grindz" for more info! |
